“Measuring Heat Stress in Greenhouses”
Hello, this is one of the bloggers at OTA Floriculture Research Institute, better known as “Hanaken”.
When it comes to international floriculture news, one of the websites I regularly read is FloralDaily.
This time, I would like to introduce another article that caught my attention:
➾ Making Heat Stress Measurable in Greenhouses
The article presents an agricultural technology service, but what particularly interested me was the idea of looking at heat stress as a cumulative value.
Rather than focusing only on a daily maximum temperature, the concept is to calculate the actual burden that high temperatures place on plants over time and express it as a single indicator.
In greenhouse production, temperature monitoring and data analysis are already common practices. However, using a cumulative heat stress index as a management tool seems like a fresh approach. In an era of increasingly frequent heat waves, it may even become essential knowledge. It also reminds me of the way postharvest flower quality is often evaluated through the relationship between temperature and exposure time.
According to the article, this heat stress indicator is called Heat Stress Degree Days (HSDD).
In simple terms, the concept can be described as:
Temperature above a defined threshold × the length of time plants are exposed to it
The article uses approximately 30°C (86°F) as an example threshold for heat-sensitive ornamental crops. Temperatures above this level are accumulated over time to create a stress value that represents the actual heat load experienced by the crop.
Because the article introduces a commercial service, the scientific validation behind the method is likely still evolving. After all, the extreme temperatures we are experiencing today have only become a major concern in recent years, and research is still catching up.
That said, I found the idea itself quite thought-provoking and worth sharing. I am also curious whether similar research is being conducted in Japan. It is certainly an area that deserves further attention.
